Founder & CMD, The Ushmaya

Rajesh Chada is the Founder and Chairman & Managing Director of The Ushmaya, India's first hydrotherapy-led boutique wellness retreat, on the banks of the Ganges at Haripur Kalan, Rishikesh.

Ushmaya began as a personal search. After years of the kind of life that quietly erodes a body — travel, deadlines, meals eaten standing up — he went looking for something more substantial than a spa weekend and found it in the 150-year-old water cure of Father Sebastian Kneipp, the Bavarian priest who built an entire system of medicine out of cold water, movement, herbs, nutrition and balance. What struck him was how closely Kneipp's five pillars mirrored what Ayurveda had been saying in this same valley for three thousand years.

He spent the following years building the bridge: bringing clinically guided hydrotherapy to India and integrating it with Ayurveda, yoga, nutrition and the Himalayan environment itself, under the supervision of resident physicians. The result is deliberately not a hotel and not a spa — it is a medical wellness destination where every therapy is prescribed rather than ordered from a menu.

He writes here on hydrotherapy, seasonal Ayurvedic living and the practical business of choosing a retreat — plainly, and without the wellness industry's habit of promising more than water and discipline can deliver.
